Case study: Flagstone floor takes centre stage at Daylesford Farm

Broughton castle flagstones at Daylesford, Cotswolds

Character, texture and a colour palette to complement traditional Cotswold stone were the key considerations for the design team when sourcing materials for Heritage House at Daylesford Farm.

Used as a flexible space for bespoke events and celebrations, Heritage House is one of the latest developments to be completed at the renowned organic farm and destination in the Cotswolds.

The ethos at Daylesford Farm has its roots set firmly in nature and sustainability, encouraging others to connect with and celebrate all that nature gives us. With a farm shop and home shop, wellness spa, restaurants and beautiful gardens, it has become the perfect destination for those looking to relax, recuperate and appreciate all that is natural and rural.

And this appreciation of nature’s beauty is echoed in our passion for natural stone flooring, paving and tiles.

Daylesford’s architectural designer Jonathon Phillips said: “The project sought to capture the essence of traditional Cotswolds farm and agricultural buildings, so finding a tile that harmonised well with the local Cotswold stone used in the construction of Heritage House was key for us.”

Following a visit to our Newbury showroom, a larger flagstone floor was specified throughout the more expansive spaces, while smaller pavers would be installed to add character and interest to the more cosy or utilitarian areas of the building.

Broughton Castle flagstones, with a hand-worked aged finish, brought the texture, patina and colour tones sought, while our Overbury beige limestone pavers were chosen as the complementary smaller option.

Jonathon added: “We loved the colour, texture, size, and robust qualities of the tiles. They provided instant character to the scheme and blended well with our well-established palette of local materials.

“We also highly appreciated the passion you have for natural stone. Your knowledge and creative suggestions really helped us shape our floor finishes package.”

Rustic, hand-finished Medina antiqued sinks in a complementary stone were also specified for the cloakrooms and these were made to the bespoke sizes required for the various spaces.

The finished project has resulted in an exquisite new facility which is filled with an essence of cosiness, depth of texture and rustic value thanks to the array of natural materials and salvaged items used throughout.

Our founder and director, Andy Brindle said: “It was a pleasure to work with Jonathon and his colleagues to help specify the right rustic stone for project.

“My passion has always been to develop and supply rustic natural stones that are so well finished they mirror a genuine old floor. To see this project completed with some of these materials is wonderful, not just for myself but for everyone in our business.”

The beauty of antique finish stone floors

Broughton Castle flagstones are an exclusive material that feature in our range of antique finish floors and paving, all of which have been developed to replicate the look and feel of a genuinely old flagstone floor. As well as their immediate impact once installed, the other beauty of such materials is they simply get better with age. The more they are walked on, the more patina and character they develop. They are also extremely durable and forgiving, with any small scratches or marks able to be lost in the variation, natural markings and texture of the flagstones.
