What are tumbled stone pavers?
Tumbled limestone is a natural stone which has been through a process of vibrating and ‘ageing’ inside a tumbling machine, creating layers of character and a softened, older appearance. Within the tumbling machine, the tiles rotate slowly, with small pebbles gently knocking and rubbing against the limestone to create a worn consistent surface texture whilst simultaneously rounding the tile edges. Whilst all types of limestone can be tumbled, more dense stones can take longer to create this aged process so are left in the tumbling machine for longer. Colour tones can be from white, creams, greys, greens, blues and even black. Our knowledge of each material allows us to produce finishes that best suit each stone’s strength and capabilities; if you’re not sure which would be best suited to your project, get in touch with our expert team to discuss your requirements.
How do tumbled floors compare to non-tumbled tiles?
Tumbled limestones have a softened, worn and aged appearance, often ideal for rustic aesthetics. However, different finishing processes applied to the stones before tumbling can make them have a smoother modern look, or indeed a more rustic texture creating a more old-aged flagstone appearance. Tumbled tiles do tend to need slightly wider grout joints than very modern tiles because of the worn round edges, this is part of the charm and character when choosing aged stone floors that resemble old-looking flagstones and paving. Grout colour choice is also key to the finished look and we have a range of grouts we feel best suit our stones for both interior and exterior projects.
