Case study: “The right stone floor for the next 100 years”

the right stone floor for a hallway

Finding the right stone floor to suit the history of this client’s home seemed to her to be an ‘impossible task’ but our Paris Casa antiqued limestone fitted the bill perfectly.

Forming part of the original farms at Farnham Castle, this very grand, former working farmhouse has undergone a beautiful and sympathetic restoration.

The kitchen cabinets have been painstakingly refurbished using Fired Earth’s Top Hat paint to give them the grandeur this home deserves. The before and after pictures below pay testament to the effort made. This deep blue tone works wonderfully with the stone floor which is part of our range of hand-aged limestone floors which are created to resemble a flagstone floor that has been laid for many decades.

Our client said: “We couldn’t afford a whole kitchen refurb  but kitchens come and go and styles will change but the floor will hopefully be there for the next 100 years so it needed to be the one thing we got right.

“This house and it’s land is one of the original farms of Farnham Castle so whilst to me it is a grand house, it was ultimately a working farmhouse, so finding a stone which was beautiful and elegant yet hardy and rugged seemed an impossible task!”

As well as in the kitchen, our Paris Casa limestone has also been used throughout the welcoming hallway which feature original red brick walls and a traditional farmhouse door.

Our client added: “I wanted the stones to look like old flags with worn edges, a rough surface but without them being so uneven that it looked contrived. This particular stone is so tactile, it feels warm yet earthy and all the stone is different, so you get a truly original feel.

“I also chose this stone as I was looking for a greyish tone but I didn’t want a dark grey northern millstone type look, nor did I want the beautiful creamy Cotswold colour. I did some research on Surrey quarry stone and what might have been down on the floor when the house was originally built in 1817 and it’s a mix of light grey and beige and taupe and this is exactly what this stone offers. The colour variation is not too diverse but the different tones blend beautifully and the rough edges and wide grouting make the floor feel as though it’s always been there.”

To complete the kitchen look our client used Little Greene’s Fog Pale paint on the walls and then filled the room with an eclectic mix of items collected from antique shops plus much-loved pieces passed down by her grandmother including her weighing scales and tea set.

The stone floor also continues into the cloakroom where unlacquered brass taps from Studio Ore have been used to create a sense of luxury.

We believe in the importance of choosing the right stone floor for a property. As our client points out, such a floor should be in place for decades and therefore making the right choice can be tricky.
